During today’s regular press briefing at the U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce addressed growing concerns about Bangladesh’s security situation and press freedom, emphasising Washington’s commitment to diplomatic engagement.
A journalist referenced the Bangladesh Army Chief’s recent warning about potential Islamist extremist attacks, asking what measures the U.S. is taking to prevent such violence. Questions were also raised about the Yunus government’s unlawful detention of journalists.
Bruce responded: “Our administration and Secretary of State remain fully committed to diplomatic solutions. We believe in direct dialogue with our partners worldwide.” She added, “Under the President’s leadership, we expect every nation, particularly Bangladesh, to uphold human rights standards and meet their citizens’ legitimate expectations.”
However, the spokesperson declined to specify what diplomatic pressure might be applied regarding Bangladesh’s specific situation. The exchange makes clear that Washington continues to monitor Bangladesh’s political and human rights conditions closely.
